The HRBN Survey. The HRBN's sector-based Surveys have been conducted annually since 1997; they are the cornerstone programs of the Network. Presently, the HRBN's Annual Benchmarking Survey is conducted in one sector only - for HR/P&C functions in Canadian municipal organizations (regional municipalities, cities, districts, towns and townships, etc.)
We're always looking for new municipal sector participants! If you're an HR professional from that sector and want to find out more, get in touch with Colin Dawes, the Founder and Leader of the Network, directly, and he'll fill you in. If you're not from the municipal sector, no fear - Colin is always interested both to talk benchmarking and measurement of the HR function with other practitioners and also to discuss the HRBN survey, including its potential applications in other sectors. |
More about the Annual Benchmarking Survey
What is it?The Survey is comprehensive MS Excel-based statistical survey containing close to sixty (60) indicators of Human Resources and "People Asset" performance. The Survey also contains a section designed to facilitate benchmarking of specific HR policies and programs.
It's YOUR survey.Survey indicators, formulas and other content are determined with Network member input. Contact information for each member organization is available to members to assist in establishing both formal and informal benchmarking relationships.
Innovative Practices. The Survey also facilitates benchmarking on the programs-side, providing insight into the specific policies and practices which may underlie the statistical results.

How does it work? The survey is released annually in early April and is due back in early July. Participants input their data into the Excel file and return the file to Colin. He does the rest! The fee for the survey service is presently $550 plus HST.
What is my obligation as a member? There is no obligation associated with being placed in our contact database, nor is there a cost to join the Network or receive the Survey. Participants are able to decide from year to year whether organizational priorities will allow them to participate, and if they can, how many indicators they can take on.

What do I receive? The Report of the Annual Benchmarking Survey is released in October and provides common statistical results (averages and percentiles) broken down by size of municipality (two groups) and province, plus analysis and commentary from Colin. Participants also get MS Excel files containing the raw data behind the numbers, and, for benchmarking purposes, a confidential ID sheet enabling them to identify the specific results of other participants. Reach out to Colin directly for details.
Non-Participants.The full Report is only available to non-participants the following year, at a higher cost, and then only if they agree to participate in the next Survey. Non-participants receiving the survey are not able to access the identities of the participant organizations or identify their individual results.
